It can be, but you should make it clear to him that it is so that neither of you are on the wrong page about what's going on. THAT is the worst way to ruin a date. It's just like in a game, you gotta communicate your intentions. Or your play, like knowing what kind of spike your setter is intending for you.

Think of it this way: I plan to set you up for a pipe, then do a dump without warning you. Neither of us are on the same page and I decided to do that. While it's not the exact same thing, I knew what was going on and you didn't. Your date should know it's a date.
